Probiotics for Colitis

Probiotics are known to have a significantly positive impact on human health. They are bacteria and yeast that can be ingested from certain types of foods and supplements. The body works naturally with these microorganisms to help keep the lining of the intestines healthy and maintain a healthy immune system. They also assist the body with breaking down food.

Colitis is known as an inflammation of the colon; however, it is often the condition that is used to describe the inflammation of the large intestine. It may occur when the intestinal lining has become damaged or the balance of good bacteria becomes agitated. Introducing new forms of good bacteria to the body may help it to repair itself and minimize the effects of colitis.

Probiotics can be found in many different types of foods. These foods contain living organisms that will work together with the bacteria found in the intestines. Dairy products are known to have a significant amount of probiotics. Yogurt is the most popular type of probiotic food. Yogurt products should clearly state that the product contains live and active cultures on the package. Individuals who cannot digest regular dairy products can get use other products such as almond, soy, rice or coconut milk to get the live cultures the body needs.

Some salad dressings, nutrition bars and pickled vegetables contain live cultures. Raw sauerkraut or pickled beets may contain live cultures. If unsure whether it contains live bacteria, check the label of the product. Products that are rich in live bacteria are raw and not pasteurized. Other sources of food that contain probiotics may include:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Miso
  • Kimchi
  • Kefir
  • Pickles
  • Hummus

Probiotics also come in other forms such as tablets, capsules and powders. It doesn’t matter how the body receives the probiotics just as long as the food or supplement contains enough of the live organisms to grow inside the intestines. While there is no definitive evidence that probiotics can cure colitis, studies have shown that good bacteria can help block the chemical factors that are involved with inflammation. It can also help lessen the symptoms of diarrhea and prevent eczema that is associated with an allergy to cow’s milk.
